Vigilant

The souls I wouldn’t try to fix,
the compliments I didn’t give,
and all the hearts who never asked
for mine to be so earnest—

I’m a bit specific and verbose,
but curious instead of presumptuous.
Studious, but as noninvasive
as the world which is

pervading all the space I don’t
take up when I clutch
everybody’s energy and slam—
I mean, I write it down.

  1. I read you when I see something up on the screen. I am not ready sometimes and what I see is not what I get. So I move along. I move along knowing with a bit of luck you will still be there later. Risky, I know. I’ve had a note or two put in my progress notes by mental health workers to this effect; “risk taker”.
This is all to say I read this intriguing “Vigilant” just now. I read it more than a few times. I wanted to forget it and then I wanted to read it again. Something kept pulling me back. This is what kept me circling and re-reading; “The souls I wouldn’t try to fix…”. I was touched more deeply than I can express. Two directions of need. The need of the other’s soul and the need to respond. It more than multiplies. It grows by powers of ten and above. That’s all I can say at the moment.
You continue to speak my language. Peace.

    • Hi George! Thank you for this comment. I really enjoy it.

The idea of wanting to both forget something and experience it again is really interesting and relatable, and I appreciate it as a high compliment – we artists are conditioned to stop making people uncomfortable, haha, but if we’re making work that’s truthful or moving, it’s likely that we’re making people uncomfortable. 🙂

I’m glad to hear it touched you deeply – I like your wording of “Two directions of need. The need of the other’s soul and the need to respond.” I think we forget our own need to respond when we’re taught impossible rules regarding HOW to.

Thank you for reading this time! 🙂
